That second half matters more than it looks. The pallet is self-documenting, in the same way the Laboratory's plasmid requirement is only obvious once you find it: once you interact with it, the game lists its own requirements, so you do not need an external checklist for the rest of the deposit.

The Laboratory is a real place, not a menu

Update #1 confirms the Laboratory exists as a location with its own content. Two separate lines in the patch notes touch it — one fixing issues with the Laboratory cutscene and newly discovered notes, another updating textures and materials including assets in the Laboratory.

So the books are gating a space rather than a stat. That also means a stalled Laboratory unlock during launch week may have been the cutscene bug rather than a missing deposit — worth checking after updating.

Why 'among other stuff' is the operative phrase

The reply says the books are needed to unlock the lab "among other stuff", which means the deposit is a list rather than a single item type. The pallet interaction is what turns that vague phrase into a concrete checklist inside your own save.

Nothing published names the full list. The developers' pre-launch FAQ covers growing, soil, cooking and the economy, and does not describe the Laboratory unlock at all, so the pallet UI is currently the only complete source (待确认).

How the notes system connects

Update #1 groups notes and quests together and fixed an issue that could prevent random notes from appearing. Notes are how this game hands you information, and the Laboratory fix is listed alongside "newly discovered notes".

That suggests the books, the notes and the Laboratory are one chain rather than three unrelated things. If notes stopped appearing for you, the downstream unlocks would stall too — which is exactly the kind of dead end that looks like a missing item.

What is still unknown

How many database books the pallet needs, where they all come from, and what the Laboratory actually does once opened are all undocumented. The single forum reply is the only public description of the mechanic.

That is worth stating plainly rather than filling in. A wiki that guesses a number here would be inventing it, and the pallet already tells each player the real answer for their own save.
