Tiny Eden demo save not working
Do not continue from a demo save. In the launch announcement the developers wrote, in bold, that demo save games will not work or will crash, and asked everyone to start a new game instead. Update #1 then made the rule stricter: any save from a version before 0.10.0 no longer appears in the Load Game menu at all.

What the developers actually said
The instruction is not a community workaround — it is in the official launch post, and Update #1 then made it structural, set apart from the rest of the text in bold. The developers repeated the same sentence twice in a row, which is unusual enough to signal how many people they expected to hit it.
Read literally, it covers two different failure modes. A demo save may simply not work, or it may crash the game outright. Neither is described as recoverable, and no migration tool is mentioned anywhere in the post.
Update #1 changed which saves load at all
The day after launch the developers shipped Update #1, and the first section of the patch notes is about save files. Anything created before version 0.10.0 is no longer supported and will not appear in the Load Game menu — so an old file does not fail when you load it, it simply stops being listed.
Saves inside the 0.10.x range remain compatible with each other. In practice that means a save made on launch day still loads after Update #1, while a demo-era file is gone from the menu whether or not it would have crashed.
- Saves older than 0.10.0 — no longer supported, removed from the Load Game menu
- Saves from any 0.10.x version — still compatible with each other
- Demo saves — explicitly called out as not working, before the 0.10.0 rule even applies
What Update #9 changed in the Load Game menu
Update #9 on 18 September says incompatible saves are now hidden from the Load Game menu instead of appearing as unusable entries, which fits the rule above: a demo save simply does not show. It also asks for confirmation before a new game overwrites your autosave. The save folder itself is on the save file location page.
What this costs you, and what it does not
The loss is bounded: it is the demo garden, not your account. Progress in Tiny Eden lives in the save file, so a fresh start means replanting, re-earning money and re-unlocking whatever the demo let you reach.
What the developers have not published is whether anything at all carries across — no cosmetic unlock, recipe list or reputation transfer is mentioned in either the launch post or Update #1. Treat a new game as genuinely new until that is stated somewhere official (待确认).

If the game already crashed on a demo save
Start a new game from the main menu rather than trying to repair the old file. Nothing in the official notes describes a repair path, and the 0.10.0 rule means the file may not even be offered to you after Update #1.
Make sure you are actually launching the full game and not the demo. The demo was a separate Steam app with its own app ID and its own install, and although it is no longer listed on the store, a copy you already installed stays in your library — so it is still possible to launch the wrong one. Running the demo build and expecting full-game behaviour produces exactly the kind of confusion this page exists to clear up. In a separate thread about a project requirement bug, one of the developers' first troubleshooting questions was whether the demo was still installed, and they asked players to uninstall it if so (the Code Green HQ report).
A developer's launch-day note says a game continued from the demo or the playtest will crash or be hugely bugged. The other launch failures are on the not launching page.
Why demo saves break in the first place
A demo is a snapshot of the game at one moment; the release build is months of changes on top of it. When the shape of what a save has to describe changes — new items, new quest state, new economy — an older file no longer maps onto it cleanly.
Update #1 is a small illustration of how fast that shape moves. In a single day the developers changed café selling, café orders, note and quest handling and the Laboratory cutscene. Each of those touches state that a save has to store.

How this fits the rest of launch week
The save warning is one of a cluster of launch-week issues the developers addressed directly, and the pattern is consistent: they are reading the Steam discussions and the Discord and shipping fixes against them. Update #1 opens by saying so explicitly.
That matters for how much weight to give community workarounds right now. When the official notes and a forum thread disagree in launch week, the notes are the newer information, and they are the ones being updated.

- Whether any demo progress, unlock or cosmetic carries into the full game is not documented.
- No official save-migration tool has been announced.
Frequently asked
- Can I transfer my Tiny Eden demo save to the full game?
- No. The developers state that demo save games will not work or will crash, and ask players to start a new game instead.
- Why has my old save disappeared from the Load Game menu?
- Update #1 dropped support for saves made before version 0.10.0. Those files are no longer listed. Saves from 0.10.x versions remain compatible with each other.
- Does anything carry over from the demo?
- Nothing is described as carrying over in the launch post or in Update #1. Whether any unlock transfers is not documented (待确认).
