Tiny Eden: what the kitchen upgrade actually does

The portion buttons are the whole upgrade

Two separate threads start the same way: a player buys the upgrade, cooks, and still gets one portion. The answer both times is that the size is a choice on the cooking screen, and it stays at one portion unless you change it.

How many sizes you get depends on how far you have upgraded. One player who had bought two levels said they had been staring right at the control, fixated on the 1x below it.

Bigger batches now cost more ingredients

Players say early buyers got more food for the same ingredients, with a bigger portion using the ingredients of a single one. By 11 September that had changed, and players report the ingredient count now multiplies with the portion size.

Update #3 on 10 September lists a fix for incorrect ingredient quantities and cooking requirements, which fits the timing, but the notes do not mention the kitchen upgrade, and the developers have not said which behaviour is intended.

The garden vegetable stew exception

Two players found one recipe that still behaves the old way. With the upgrade, garden vegetable stew gives two portions from a small cook, while other dishes ask for double the ingredients.

One of them took that as a sign the multiplied ingredients elsewhere are a bug. Nothing official says which of the two is the intended rule, so treat the stew as something that may change in a later patch.

Is it still worth buying

Several players who bought it after the change regret it. One says they could have used a second hob instead and saved the money for recipes; another says the description promised two portions from one cooking, which now amounts to two cookings at the same time.

What it still saves is time at the stove. The complaint running through these threads is a shortage of ingredients rather than of cooking time, so if that is your bottleneck too, the upgrade adds little until your harvests catch up.
