Tiny Eden

Tiny Eden: which planter each crop needs

Planters have names like Castor and Hamal, and a community sheet sorts what each one holds by size and depth. Players report bell and chili peppers go in the Castor, zucchini in the Hamal, lettuce and broccoli in the Atria, cauliflower in the Altair, and onions start in the Canopus; the developers confirmed cabbage needs the Castor or the Hamal. One player found a planter's plant list appears when you hover it in build mode.

How planters are named and sorted

The names do not say what a planter holds, and players point out that the shop, the build menu and the planter itself give no size information either. An unofficial community spreadsheet, which the developers linked in one of their Steam replies, sorts them into five footprints and three depths: 2x2, 4x4, 6x6, 2x4 and 2x8, each in a shallow, medium and deep version.

Depth does most of the sorting. In that sheet, onions and radishes sit in the deep planters and herbs such as parsley and chamomile in the shallow ones, while a bigger footprint mostly holds more of the same plants and opens up a few larger crops such as peppers.

Which planter the stuck crops need

These are the crops that come up again and again in Steam threads. Each row gives the planter a player named in reply, and the other planters the community sheet lists for the same crop.

The pepper row is the one that blocks progress most often, because the quest seeds arrive before you can plant them. That problem has its own page.

Every crop and the planter depth it needs

The sheet the developers linked on 21 September has a Planter tab that lists, for each of the 15 planters, the plants it takes and how many fit. Turned around by crop, it shows that depth does the sorting: 11 of the 38 plants go in shallow planters, 14 in medium ones and 13 in deep ones, and none appears in two depths. Read the depth here, then find the planter name in the footprint table at the top of this page.

The counts follow the footprint. Most crops take one plant per 2x2 tile-area, so a 4x4 holds four and a 6x6 holds nine. Onion and radish take four per 2x2 area, and garlic takes sixteen in a 4x4 medium planter and thirty-six in a 6x6. The single-plant crops, the peppers, cucumber, tomato and the rest, take one plant per planter and appear only in the 4x4 and 6x6 sizes; blueberry, pumpkin, zucchini, rose and watermelon appear only in the 6x6. A dash means the sheet lists no planter of that size for the crop.

Finding it out in game

The game does not print this on the seed or in the shop, which players say was raised as demo feedback too. A seed's info does give a size such as 2x2 medium, but that label does not appear on the planter blueprint or in the build menu.

The workaround one player describes is build mode. Hover over a planter in the planter section without clicking, and a list of the plants it holds appears above it; when that list ends in a +1, the only way to see the rest is to build the planter and open its plant selection.

One player adds that a planter you already own can take new plants once those plants are unlocked, so an old planter is worth checking again before you buy another.

A player who wanted to grow radishes and onions but could not build the pot for them was told that building needs planks and screwers from the DIY Club shop, on the first line of its All tab, and that upgrading needs textile, sold there too. Another player added that some quests come before you can plant certain things, and that reputation with the faction downstairs unlocks them.

  • "if you go into build mode and into planter subsection and hover with your mouse over each planter (don't click on it or it will create the hologram to build it at the point you are aming at), there will be a list above it, which plants it can hold."

Upgraded planters and garden beds

Several players upgraded a pot, saw no difference, and asked what the upgrade was for. One reply points to the in-game encyclopedia, which the player says describes a bonus to plant growth and quality.

Part of the answer came in Update #6 on 14 September, which says textile and bioplastic garden beds now correctly provide growth speed bonuses of 15% and 25%. The word correctly suggests those bonuses were not being applied before, which fits the reports of no visible change.

What the developers have confirmed

Two of the rows above come straight from developer replies. Cabbage needs the Castor or the Hamal, and lettuce grows in the two deep planters, Atria and Acrux. The lettuce answer went to a player whose orders needed lettuce but who had not unlocked either planter yet.

Zucchini was another unlocking problem: two players described being unable to plant it in any planter they had, and the community sheet lists only the 6x6 shallow Hamal for it.

On 21 September a developer gave the same kind of answer for two more crops, replying to a player who had bought every pot and could not find where to plant roses and melons: they can only be planted in the Acrux, the 6x6 deep planter. The reply also pointed to the community resource sheet used for the crop chart above.

Garden beds after Update #9

Update #9 on 18 September reworked the planter models. The notes say the models for all three materials, bioplastic, textile and recycled, were updated across all sizes from 50x50 to 150x150 and all three border heights, and that several missing variants were added.

Whether the community sheet's planter list includes the new variants is not stated. Update #6 had already made the textile and bioplastic growth bonuses work.

Update #10 on 21 September added new materials for Deluxe garden beds and fixed an issue that could prevent garden beds from being used in certain situations. The notes do not say which situations.

Clearing or combining planters

Players report a planter has to be emptied first: dig out the plant and the soil with the trowel, then sow something else or break it with the sledgehammer, which one player recalls returns some of the materials. Both tools are bought in the shop, and the full steps are on removing placed items.

Combining small planters into a bigger one is also how players free up drones. In the community sheet one 4x4 Altair holds four bean plants, the same as four 2x2 Sirius planters, and a player notes the swap frees three drone assignments; the drones page explains why that matters.

Not confirmed yet

  • The community sheet is unofficial and still being filled in; the developers linked it but have not published their own planter list.
  • Unlock requirements for most planters are not documented officially.
  • How much the upgraded bed bonus shortens a harvest in practice is not stated.

Frequently asked

Which planter do peppers go in?
Players report bell and chili peppers go in the Castor, the shallow 4x4 planter, and the community sheet also lists the shallow 6x6 Hamal.
How do I know which planter a seed needs?
One player hovers the planter in build mode to see its plant list. The seed's info shows a size such as 2x2 medium, but the planter itself does not.
Do upgraded pots do anything?
Update #6 says textile and bioplastic garden beds now correctly give 15% and 25% growth speed bonuses.
